Parents of Umpires,
Parents please ask your children if they want to be an umpire for your local little league. It is helpful in so many ways. Some advantages for your children are:
- They earn a bit of income for themselves.
- They interact with a non-profit in which they help youths in their community.
- They develop advanced knowledge of the game of baseball.
- They learn leadership and accountability for themselves and others.
These are key things we are all working to teach our kids and I am committed to developing FLAG Little Leagues umpire program to accomplish these goals.
You can expect your child will umpire at least one game a week at 6pm starting the third week in April. There will be some weekend games. Depending on the age range they can make between $5 and $25 a game. There are two training sessions. One at the end of March, a book training session, and one in the middle of April as part of an exhibition game. They must attend these sessions to learn how to ump in a game. There are some very key concepts they must understand and put to use each game that we will teach them.
So please at sign-ups this February have your child come to talk to me about what it takes to be an umpire. We will collect contact information at this time. This is a great place to start to learn about what it means to work for a local organization for a sport they love.
Thanks,
Eric Podgers
